How To Eat Healthily When Travelling!!

If you have made that firm decision to change the way you eat and live life the healthy way, you will always come across challenges along the way that make it seemingly impossible to stick to eating healthy. It’s one thing eating our perfectly balanced prep food that is delivered to your door, but what about when you go on holiday?

Restaurants, Parties, friend’s places, work situations can be difficult enough but when you are heading off for a break, you may think your diet needs to go by the wayside.  All these situations can present challenges to our resolve in maintaining good nutrition but planned right, taking some minor steps, you can ensure you stay in tip-top condition whilst you are away.  I love my food, I eat out regularly and I travel a lot, so if you are like me and love to get out and about read on.  I will give you some simple steps on how you can stay in shape when you are on the move.

On face-value, sticking to a nutritious diet while travelling can seem to be one of the more difficult things to do. However, if you learn how to make smart choices, having healthy food whilst out of the house is really not that hard. To be frank, it’s probably not the best time in which to start a healthy diet, but if you are currently making healthy choices in your foods already, modifying your diet slightly to accommodate travel, is not as challenging as it may first seem.

Don’t be afraid to ask

If you are travelling by airplane, your flight may include the dreaded airplane food, which, depending on the selection, can often be of poor nutritional value. A tip to improve quality is to ask about your food options when you book your flight. Whilst you might be a carnivore, check to see if there are vegetarian dishes available. Typically, vegetarian dishes are more nutritional on planes.

Even better if you ask for a special dietary requirement such as gluten-free or you need nut-free products (even though you may be fine with either). In some cases, if you request for a specific meal plan prior to your flight, the food is often pre-prepared just for you, meaning it is likely to be fresher and typically healthier.

On planes, we have a tendency to eat what’s put in front of us, especially if we associate it with being free (included in the flight cost). Even the most hardened healthy traveller will often plough through the meal as long as it tastes ok. So another great tip is, if you can, eat just before your flight, therefore you won’t actually want to eat the meal that is served, well, certainly not the first meal.

Planning ahead

When travelling by road, in particular in the car, it’s easy to be tempted to stop at fast-food restaurants, when hunger strikes. The big signs, glistening pictures of seemingly delicious food and cheap prices (although not that cheap when you actually get in there) are all seductive temptations. It goes without say, avoid this whenever possible! I realise when you are on vacation, you may wish to splurge a tiny bit, but having fast food more than once during a week can really be bad for your health and will undo all the good work you have put in.  When you are tempted, a little creative imagination can help you drive straight past. Picture, in your mind, a negative occurrence of a previous consumption of fast food like how bloated & sluggish you will feel afterwards, how the digestive system can’t process the food for hours afterwards, and how all that sugar is going to pile on the pounds. If you must actually go, choose the healthiest options available, like grilled chicken breasts, salads and go for the water option as opposed to fizzy drinks.

Also, remember that you can take your own meals when travelling. I often carry my prep food with me in one of those cooler bags.  Aeroplanes have microwaves and I simply tell the cabin crew that I have a special dietary requirement, so they are only too pleased to help me heat up my yummy meal.  Most petrol stations too have microwave ovens, so again no excuses, just a little thought and you have a great way to avoid high-fat and high-cholesterol junk food meals.

Another tip for you is to call ahead to ask if there will be a refrigerator in your hotel room.  In particular, when I travel alone on business, I used to eat the worst when I arrived late at the hotel. But now, If they have a fridge in the room, I take a few of my prep meals for the days ahead, or if I’m abroad I go shopping and stock up on healthy snacks and salads for the duration of my trip.

Smart Choices

Lastly, make smart choices when you eat out in restaurants too. Little changes like ensuring you get the dressing on the side, in particular when selecting salads or pasta, but also when there is a sauce with your steak or chicken dish. Check the menu thoroughly and make sure you understand all the little symbols printed next to the menu item. Many places now show dieting options directly within the menu for us health-conscious people. Control your portions by ordering lunch menu sizes or splitting the meal in half and getting a doggie bag. Just because it’s in front of you, doesn’t mean you have to eat it all at once. Believe me, making these small but smart changes will soon get you well on your way to healthy eating, even away from home.

Well Worth the Effort

Yes, eating healthy foods when you travel takes a bit of care and work. However, your health is worth it. Eating good meals high in nutrition will not only keep your weight in check but can also assist in fighting illnesses that you are likely to encounter when travelling and you will find yourself feeling more alert and fresh so that you can enjoy your trip even more.
